In a bid to restore green land cover as part of the environmental conservation plan, environmentalist in Obongi district are calling for more safety measures from the refugees and the host communities.
According to the stakeholders, they are battling cases of land degradation and poor disposal of waste as 40% of the planet is degraded which is due to increasing population.
Lydia Jenifer the environment officer of Obongi district said there is need for all the stakeholders to create more awareness of land protection since large percentage of land has been degraded. “This our land and it’s our future if you don’t protect this land, if we continue degrading this land we might not archive the objectives of the future generation” Lydia noted. She further assured the public that if they don’t restore the environment, this will affect the food security.
Emberuku Pius the sub county chief of Itula said matters of land restoration is everyone’s role. “We are the same, the climatic change we are experiencing affects both the persons of concern and ourselves that means the mantle is in our hands to restore the environment, “he disclosed.
He added that lots of resources have been injected in to planting trees but the aspect of growing, taking care of is not coming up clearly which is the biggest challenge.
Azubu Michael secretary for refugee affairs in the office of LC 5 Obongi said the issue of environmental degradation has affected the district. “If we not don’t protect our environment it will be a challenge to our side, you look at Obongi, the way we are receiving rain there is a problem, you go to the other sub counties you will get the vegetation is green,” he stated.
The leaders and stakeholders therefore echoed that, there is need for intervention in addressing the great challenge of waste management and environmental degradation.
