The minister of state for primary education Hon. Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaduccu has refuted a recent report by media that show ministry of education and sports approving the use of phones and laptops by students in schools.
Last month the media published that on August 24, 2024, Janet Kataaha Museveni the minister of education and sports during the launch of the ministry’s digital agenda strategy in Kampala had given a leeway for the use of digital devices including smartphones, for students to improve learning in schools in the country.
This however received criticism from members of public sighting the dangers of the use of digital devices by students especially the adolescents.
While officiating the closure of a 5 day ICT training for science teachers by Makerere business school under the Uganda Secondary Education Expansion Project (USEEP) on Friday in Arua city, Dr. Moriku disregarded the information describing is as media misinformation.
“That was the media that misreported, we have not yet accepted a policy of having phones in schools by students but we have accepted a policy to have well organized systematic ways of managing computers as a software in schools so that you can make use of it but there are certain information need to be kept away from the students,” Kaduchu refuted.
In many traditional schools, possessing mobile devices like phones has been a serious offense, with students facing suspension if found in possession of such items.
Minister Kaduchu however advised the schools to restrict the use of the digital devices to the students as they implement the digital Agenda strategy.
“We do not want to see the ponography in the computer lab and the students are able to access that one, mama Janet said no we have accepted digital era, go ahead with it but there are programmes that students should not be able to access, they should not be initiated to it, we know the issue of homosexuality it came through computers, there are certain issues people want to use our learners to initiate them so i want to appeal to you take precaution about all that,” Kaduchu declared.
