A 32 years old man in Alebtong District has been lynched by Mob over allegedly killing his grandmother over food.

The deceased, only identified as Jimmy Omaa of Amon Omito Apala Town Council, allegedly murdered Jane Acio, 80 years old, on Independence Day.

Martin Bongo, a local resident in the area reported that on October 9, 2024, Omaa, followed his grandmother Acio at her home and broke the door entered in and pulled her outside and cut her several times on her head, under unclear circumstances where she bled badly and died at the scene.

George Sunday Opio, the LCIII chairman of Apala Town Council said the accused, Omaa, had a criminal record but he condemned the mob action, “My informer called me at night and told me that a young man assaulted his grandmother. But the boy was caught up at night also. He was beaten up and I understand his life also was taken. I would advise that he was supposed to be arrested,”Opio said.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Regional police spokesperson confirmed registering two murder cases on October 9, 2024 at Amonomito cell Bediworo ward Apala Town Council, Alebtong District.

“It is true, our territorial police in Alebtong District have registered two murder cases on the 9th of October 2024 in the area of Amonomito, Apara Town Council Alebtong District,”Okema said.

He said Preliminary findings indicate that Omaa Jimmy (deceased) now killed the grandmother under the influence of Opium and drunkenness since he has that history of drug abuse.

“This is really a very unfortunate incident. We encourage the youths to desist from drug abuse, rather engage in agricultural activities that are to support our food security and also development in the areas in which they live, but above all fighting poverty among themselves,”Okema adds.

Okema said no arrest has been made on the suspected murder by Mob but inquiries into both incidents were still ongoing.
