A Shs182.56 billion teaching and research hospital is set to transform medical training, specialist patient care and health research in West Nile after Muni University officially launched the construction of the long-awaited facility.

The hospital, whose first phase is being funded by the Government of Uganda, is expected to strengthen the capacity of Muni University to provide advanced clinical training while also improving access to specialized health services for communities in West Nile and neighboring areas.

The project, whose first phase is projected to be awarded to Roko Construction Company Limited, is expected to take 30 months to complete once construction gets underway.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Muni University Chancellor Dr Luke Orombi described the project as a major milestone for the institution, expressing confidence that the facility will expand the university’s ability to combine medical education with practical patient care and scientific research.

Dr Orombi noted that a teaching and research hospital will provide an important platform where students and health professionals can acquire hands-on experience while researchers generate evidence to address some of the health challenges affecting communities in the region.

“The teaching and research hospital will strengthen the health system of West Nile and complement the work of existing health facilities, it will contribute to the training of health professionals and specialists” Dr. Orombi said.

The development comes at a time when West Nile continues to depend heavily on health facilities outside the region for some specialized medical services, forcing patients and their families to travel long distances, often at considerable financial cost.

State Minister for Health in charge of Primary Health Care, Dr Charles Ayume, described the project as a major achievement in improving health service delivery.

“The hospital will not only benefit Muni University and its students but will also contribute to strengthening the region’s health system by bringing advanced medical services closer to the population” Dr. Ayume said.

He said the government’s investment demonstrates its commitment to developing health infrastructure capable of supporting both service delivery and the training of competent health professionals.

For a region with a rapidly growing population and increasing demand for specialized healthcare, the hospital is expected to become an important referral point, reducing pressure on existing facilities and potentially cutting the need for patients to seek certain services outside West Nile.

The West Nile Parliamentary Caucus Chairperson, Hassan Fungaro Kaps Hassan, welcomed the development, appreciating the government for its continued support towards the expansion of Muni University.

“We are happy that Muni University has taken shape and steps forward along the path for growth and development. The investment in infrastructure will strengthen the university’s contribution to the development of human resources in the region, particularly in health and other professional fields.” he said.

Representing President Yoweri Museveni at the groundbreaking ceremony, Vice President her Excellency Jessica Alupo commended Muni University’s leadership for identifying critical infrastructure needs and drawing the government’s attention to them.

“Muni University has transformed and is growing from strength to strength by way of establishing further needed infrastructure. The identification of strategic infrastructure projects is essential to ensuring that public investments respond to the most pressing needs of communities” She said.

The Vice President’s message also places emphasis on the need for the project to be completed efficiently so that the substantial government investment translates into tangible services for students, health workers, researchers and the wider population.

Unlike an ordinary health facility, the planned institution is expected to serve a triple purpose — treating patients, training health professionals and generating scientific knowledge.

For medical students, the hospital will provide an environment where classroom knowledge can be translated into practical skills.

For researchers, it will create opportunities to study diseases and health conditions affecting West Nile and generate locally relevant evidence to guide healthcare policies and interventions.

For the public, the biggest expectation will be improved access to advanced healthcare closer to home.

The success of the project, however, will ultimately depend not only on the completion of the physical infrastructure but also on equipping the hospital with modern medical equipment, recruiting adequate specialized personnel and ensuring sustainable financing for its operations.

With Shs182.56 billion allocated for the first phase and a projected construction period of 30 months, the project represents a significant government commitment to integrating healthcare, higher education and scientific research in West Nile.

Once completed and fully operational, the hospital could become a major hub for medical training and specialized healthcare, while also positioning Muni University as a stronger center for health research in the region.
