Lira grade one magistrate's court has released on bail the National Unity platform Party Coordinator for Northern Uganda and two others who were recently arrested for convening an illegal assembly.

The suspects released are Moses Mawa, the National Unity platform Coordinator for Northern Uganda, together with Dennis Obic Awio, a human rights activist and Tweny Martin, a local of Tesobar, Lira City West Division.

They were arrested as they held an anti-corruption demonstration in Lira city on September 24, 2024.

However Grade one magistrate, Wamibi Jonathan William on October 01, 2024 released them on bond and they are supposed to report back to court on November 7, 2024.

“This court under section 75 of the MCR has the power to grant bail in such terms as reason. The accused persons presented sureties for those relatives capable of producing the accused person. The sureties are resident within the jurisdiction of court. The accused persons are still innocent and under the law until they are proved guilty,” Wabibi said.

The suspects’ lawyer, Patrick Okwir, said his clients were released after presenting substantial sureties. “Court concurred that it is a legal right for one to hold a demonstration to express their dissatisfaction,”Okwir said.

However, Sega Habib Jogo, the NUP Deputy Secretary for Mobilization for Northern Uganda, promised to follow up on the matter to ensure the trio get justice.

“Mawa Moses came and held people accountable, demanding accountability on how taxpayers' money is spent and then you arrest such a person. What a shame. Shame upon you because it is not that they've stolen people's money or they've stolen someone's chicken or they've raped somebody or they've killed somebody, “Habib exclaimed.
