OMORO DISTRICT NRM CHAIRPERSON ADVISES POLITICIANS TO RESPECT CULTURAL LEADERS

Dennis Kidega, the Omoro District National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party Chairperson, has urged elected leaders in Northern Uganda to uphold respect for cultural leaders as a way of supporting peaceful living.
Kidega made the remark during the meeting with Rwot of Puraga South and his over 20 executives at Bobi Sub County Headquarter on Friday September 13, 2024. "When you look at elected leaders, they don't care that they come from culture. Look at Baganda and other tribes. The elected leaders respect cultural leaders, but how is it in Northern Uganda, elected leaders want cultural leaders to respect them instead. As a party, we don't want that gap and that is why we are meeting cultural leaders to see how to bridge that gap of where elected leaders work and stop and where cultural leaders work and stop,’’ Kidega said.
He also advocated that cultural leaders should rally their subjects to eradicate poverty through different government intervention like Parish Development Model and Operation Wealth Creation, among others.
George Okello, Rwot of Puraga South said most politicians are being respected these days compared to cultural leaders because of their money. "True, people don't respect us. We are viewed as less important. We work, we don't have good transport. These days, it has changed. Respect is given to people with money, even if the person is young, as long as he or she has money. But we are preaching that elders have blessings and that respect needs to be reversed. That is what matters," Okello narrated.
The Speaker of Rwot of Puraga South, Dibala Alunyo, welcomed the ideology of NRM district leaders and said it will benefit their subject once adopted. "To me, their idea is not bad because the government is a joint hand, not a lone hand. They said they will get a means of supporting us so that we continue sensitizing our people,’’Alunyu said.
Betty Okelo-Martin, who attended the meeting, said she is ready to implement the poverty eradication message given to them from the meeting.
