Christians of St. Matthias Eucharistic Center-Ogur, under Agweng catholic Parish in Lira Diocese, have raised 26 million shilling meant to re-roof their chapel.
The Chapel Pastoral Council had planned 29.7 million shilling to do the work in the chapel which serves over 300 parishioners and is also the head zone for Ogur zone.
Tony Collins Okello, the Vice-Chapel Pastoral Council of St. Mathias Eucharistic Center, said the 26M raised have enabled them to begin the renovation work starting with erecting strong beams and have hope that the work will be over in two weeks’ time.
"The purpose of that fundraising was to generate money to
re-roof our church. The timber used for roofing during that time was not in good condition, so we decided to re-do it according to current trends and we have a belief that in two weeks' time, we shall have finished the roofing," Okello said.
Jasper Eryeny, the Catechist of St. Matthias Eucharistic Center, Ogur noted that parishioners were positive towards the collection for renovating the church.
He added that the renovation is timely because they are strategically located in the new Lira District, which will boost the Christian population and enable them to elevate to a sub-parish over time.
"Our Christians have welcomed the fundraising in good faith where most of them contributed as required. Uniquely, St. Matthias Eucharistic Center, Ogur, serves as the headquarters of Ogur Zone located where the new Lira District headquarter is situated meaning with development is coming and the number of Christians increasing, we shall in the future become a sub-parish and later a parish itself," Eryeny explained.
Rev. Fr. Alfred Okello, the parish priest of Agweng Catholic Parish praised the Christians for their independence in developing their chapel, highlighting this as a sign of strength in their faith.
"Recently, they held a fundraising drive where they raised some good money and they are now undertaking renovation. Expansion may be in the future," Fr. Okello said.
