A 58 year old woman has drowned in a cold fast moving stream in Terego district.
The deceased has been identified by security authorities as 58 year old Susan Enzaru, a resident of Emvea village Omugo Sub county Terego district.
She was swept off as she attempted to wade through the flooded stream on her way from Kubala market following a heavy downpour.
Area residents say the deceased failed to notice the culvert on the stream as it was fully covered by the running water.
According to Ogama Bernard the deceased’s brother in-law, the body of the deceased was later discovered in Oru River.
“She was from the market and was on her way back home when she found the stream flooded. She tried to cross but failed because the culvert was covered and it was rather hard for her to cross. The fast running water swept her while her body was later recovered from Oru River by passersby”, he said.
Draku Dolalson Ronald, the GISO of Omugo Sub County describes the incident as unfortunate.
“It has been very unfortunate. We have got always got such incidences every year whenever it rains. This culvert is a death trap especially for the women who cross to Kubala market”, he said.
According to reports, at least two to three people die annually whenever the stream floods as people cross to Kubala market.
A number of residents are blaming the area leadership for failing to attend to their plight for a bridge.
“What I learnt from my elders, two or more people die annually as this river floods. We have persistently called on leaders in Terego district for a bridge but nothing has been done for the last 20 years”, said Drama Italo a resident of the area.
