Over 50 teachers in Arua district on Monday 21st March 2022, stormed the regional Inspectorate of Government offices in arua over nonpayment of their salaries which they say have taken too long. The teachers who say they have been teaching from last year 2021 have complained of not being given proper explanations by the district leaders pointing out the office of the Chief Administrative Officer and the office of the District Education officer.

Draru Milka who teaches at Obaru primary school, who was among the teachers who stormed the office of the inspectorate of government says, she has many people who depend on her and its affecting their lives. “ For the last 6 months, I have been selling the food items which I had planted and now they are over, I cannot imagine what I am going to do next if this issue is not sorted out soon” she said.

A teacher at Nyirivu primary school, Guma Robert says since July 2021 he has not been receiving his salary and things have become hard for him at home. He says they were told there is no space in arua district to have them sealed and accommodated as teachers which prompted them to seek the intervention of the Inspectorate of Government.

The head of Inspectorate of Government for West Nile region, Comboni Oyet said his office received the petition from the teachers and he promised that the office will work towards ensuring the issue is handled appropriately. “We received a petition from teachers from arua district who came to complain about nonpayment of their salaries, with some  indicating not having been paid dating back to July and November last year 2021” he confirmed.
The issues of non-payments have reportedly surfaced due to the creation of new administrative units of Arua city, Arua District, Madi Okollo district and Terego district all that formerly formed Arua District.
